100 Mile Meal

Sunday, 10 October, 2010 - 12:30 - 14:30

Share a community feast made from luscious local ingredients. Bring a potluck item to share. Gather at The Learning Garden at Venice High School.
Brief presentations will be made about positive initiatives already happening in our area.

What is a 100-Mile Meal?
Not only does local produce taste better, it’s better for you! And it saves wear-and-tear on the planet. This long-distance, large-scale transportation of food consumes large quantities of fossil fuels. Did you know that the average American meal travels 1,500 miles from the farm to your table? A 100-Mile Meal gives us the opportunity to stop and ask where each ingredient that we take for granted comes from. We may then be inclined to make different choices. (As a guide for this event, 100 miles from Los Angeles takes us as far as Bakersfield in the north and almost gets us to San Diego.) Is there anything growing in your own garden you could add in?

What to Bring
potluck item to serve 10 (main dish, side dish, vegetable, salad, bread, drink, or dessert)
comprehensive label detailing the source of your ingredients
a copy of your recipe to share
your own dishes and cutlery
reusable water bottle
sunscreen
