10.10.10 Build a website to support community gardening fundraising efforts.

Sunday, 10 October, 2010 - 10:00 - 16:00

This is an opportunity to take part in a really unique mashup that mixes technology with real social change at both a local and global level.
On 10/10/10, 350.org is coordinating a collaborative day of action to work on projects that tackle climate change in your community. You can read more about it here: http://350.org/invita.... The 350.org folks are calling it a Global Work Party (since it involves getting to work & hopefully a celebration!) I've been told, over 1,400 events are already underway, in many of the countries & cities where we have Local groups.

WHY: Should we take part?
Our network gathers it's strength from supporting a wide array of issues & causes. Climate change is something that touches many of the issues we work on: refugees/immigration, health, poverty & humanitarian aid, human rights, social justice, our environment, & much more. The planet is literally heating up, and that's going to greatly impact much of our mission-driven work (& in many places, it already is.) It also provides many opportunities for social entrepreneurs and gives us a great testing ground for collaboration between different groups. Like NetSquared, 350.org is a great example of a community-driven organization and the power of connecting online and offline efforts.
BUILD A COMMUNITY PROJECT WEBSITE + SOCIAL MEDIA
Aims:-
Create a social media strategy to attract sponsorship, knowledge + participation
Plan and build a brand new simple website including creating some simple content to tell people about the project and it's aims.
Transfer skills to other Net2 members and project members.
Note:- The approach will be to KISS it, but let's see how much we as a team can create in 6 hours!

Wanted:- Your skills
We need social media gurus and brand experts
Fundraising capability
A Sponsor to host the site once built
Website gurus.

PARTWORKS is a brand new community project that has arranged lots of events and activities aimed at reducing stress and anxiety. The council has just given the go-ahead for land around the estate to be used for community food growing and micro-allotments for residents. There are plans to start building beds etc from January but right now we are still fundraising for equipment, tools etc. We also have many community members for whom digital inclusion remains a pipe dream, barriers being age, finances, EFL etc. We are hoping that by building our own website and creating a social media presence we can encourage people in technology. The gardening is to rduce stress, improve our diets, reduce food miles, excercise and build our community so everyone can take part in some form or another.

This is your chance to participate in making a local community gardening and skills exchange project go global as part of 350.org. What gets us excited is the chance to produce a really tangible output to our effort as the Net2 London Workparty. This will also be linked into Gloal discover day on th same date.
If you have one, bring along your laptop. The venue has Wifi.

How to Get Involved Planning the Event: We need help hosting the site once built. We also need technical equipment and skills on the day. Most off all we need local people with an interest in the history, and community of the area willing to be interviewed. We are building the site to help us raise funds and to have a record our donors can refer to in order to see a record of our progress over time. If you'd like to support our communit gardening efforts please contact Steph on sshobie@gmail.com OR join Netsquared at the link provided.
