101010 GWOBorg Hackathon

Saturday, 9 October, 2010 - 10:10

Join geeks around the globe for a 24-hour hackathon on 10.10.10 to build +) GWOBorg applications to help save the world!

+) GWOBorg is an international coalition of passionate problem solvers working together to assist people whose survival is threatened by lack of access to technology or communications due to violence, neglect, or catastrophe.

How do we do this? Funny you should ask, because there are three main components:
Digital Mountaintop (DMT)
The Digital Mountaintop is a free communications hub. In crisis situations, neighbors can ask for help simply by sending sending a message to the DMT.

Cloud Collective (CC)
Geeks are naturally passionate problem solvers. The Cloud Collective is crowd-sourced problem solving. Geeks actively listen to the DMT via existing social networks like Twitter and Facebook.

Water in the Well (WW)
In situations where human lives are threatened, there is no way to accurately predict the needs of a community in distress. WW allows the for the easy creation and deployment of applications that communicate to the DMT.
(For more in depth information about the three main components and our mission statement visit GWOB.org)

+) What is the 10.10.10 Hackathon?
This 24 hour event unites geeks all over the planet who are interested in creating applications that communicate with the DMT and that address situations where human lives are threatened. All you have to do is sign up to participate and then, during the 24 hour hackathon, head to your local hacker/maker or coworking and you and the space could win prizes. Or create and develop from home – as long as you’re creating a WW app that addresses a need you can participate just by signing up and developing.

The 101010 +) GWOBorg Hackathon officially begins 10:10am EST on 10.09.10. All apps must be completed no later than 10:10am on 10.10.10.

+) Who Should Participate?
Web developers....Ruby, Python, PHP, Groovy, .NET, ColdFusion...anyone who has a passion to code, hack or kluge or solve problems. We'll show you some cool free tools to help build the first WW apps. They can be OpenGov apps, communication apps, or anything that could help someone in a crisis situation.

Participation is free and open to anyone...but you must register on this Eventbrite in advance to qualify for prizes. You can register as an individual or a team. (If you're a member of a co-working, hacker or maker space, they have a chance to win a prize too if they’re registered!).

Even if you're not a coder, you can still help! Coders need help from graphic designers, project managers, IT support, and, perhaps most importantly...they need to know what to build! We need visionaries and humanitarians...people who KNOW what WW apps can do the most good. Even if you just have an idea or are not sure how you can help, just follow GWOBorg on Twitter or like GWOBorg on Facebook. Or post your thoughts the WW Discussion. You can start participating immediately and help us start solving problems.

+) What Will You Do?
Then, during the 24hour 10.10.10 Hackathon you will create an application for the GWOBorg WW Application Directory – to qualify for the prizes this app must use the Tropo API; the Tropo API allows Voice, SMS, Twitter, and IM support with the programming languages you already know. You can create apps using different API’s though and they will also be added to the WW App Directory, but will not qualify for the prizes associated with the 10.10.10 Hackathon event.
