Latin America's youth take action on climate change

¡Saludos desde Bogota! This past weekend, over one hundred youth environmental leaders from all over Latin America came together in Bogotá, Colombia to meet each other, share strategies, and make plans to build a movement against climate change in their region. The meeting was the Seventh Latin American Meeting of Youth for the Environment and Sustainability organized by the Grupo Tayrona, a fifteen-year old non-profit with a large student network across Colombia. The theme of this year's meeting was "Actions against Climate Change", and brought youth of all ages and fields - from the 8 year old indigenous youth pioneering new organic farming techniques in the Putomayo region to postgraduate research students studying glacial melt in the Andes.

The participants heard from researchers, professors, fellow youth leaders, filmmakers, and Colombia's negotiator on climate change. The sessions stimulated great conversation, and led to the creation of a joint statement from all the youth participating, and plans for a regional reforestation campaign based in high schools and college campuses.

Many exciting things happening in this movement here - I wanted to give a quick update of my travels thus far, and will be sure to get up some video footage and more photos soon.

It's Official -- Yvo de Boer's Invitiation to the Candidates

Yvo de Boer is the Executive Secretary of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, the UN body that deals with the Kyoto Treaty and global warming. Last week we received his video invitation to the next US President-elect to attempt the UN climate meetings in Poland this December. So it's official the UN wants McCain and Obama there. Watch Yvo de Boer's video, and then post your own video invitation here: www.350.org/invite

We did it!

This week, we set the goal of sending over 20,000 invitations to Obama and McCain to attend the UN Climate Meetings before tonight's debate. Thanks to your help: we did it! There are a few hours left until the debate begins and we've already blown past 21,000 invites.

350.org supporters will be on the ground at tonight's debates in New York to present Obama and McCain a giant ticket to Poland. Think of it as a prize for the election's winner - like a trip to Disney Land, but way more important (and way colder).

Our team will post updates from the action here on the blog this evening, so check back. In the meantime, keep the invites coming - and if you've already signed, pass on the invite to your friends and family.

Congrats again to all our friends and allies for breaking the 20,000 mark in style!
