Compost heap hot water system
Sunday, 10 October, 2010 - 10:00 - 15:00
Please gather at Merri Bee Organic Farm in Thomas Rd Nannup at 10 am to make a large compost heap in which we will lay several coils of pipe which we have connected to a water supply (a tank). Heat generated by the heap should provide hot water for a few months...80 liters should get up to 55 degrees Celcius and stay hot as this day and night for about 10 weeks. We have already built one in March that is just cooling down now. We need to shovel out the compost down onto the garden and start again. We hope to warm the floor of a new chicken house with this heat source. As well as learning our easy method of compost making and helping keep chickens warm without coal, we would like do our presentation on the Sustainable Table and sit you down to a fine lunch of home grown meat and veges. There is no reason why anyone should go without meat , eggs or dairy if the animals are organically raised and pasture fed. During the day we will explain how buying conventional food is supporting the most carbon polluting industry there is, and give you tips on how to grow your own or where to source organic food. This is the easiest way to reduce your carbon footprint. We will also explain how veganism can be harmful for the environment and how environmentally sound it is to be an ethical omnivore.

Event Host: Merri Bee Organic Farm is a venue for learning about permaculture. If all the world's arable lands turned organic tomorrow, 40%of atmospheric carbon would be sequestered to the soil via the sap of green plants. This happens best in an unpoisoned soil protected by mulch, as in Permaculture, organic farms and gardens, and forested wilderness areas. This is the miracle beneath our feet, the topsoil on which all life on Earth depends. Topsoil teems with more than 50 million types of fungi and 50 million plus different types of soil microbes: some remove carbon from the air and store it in the soil, some find and deliver specific minerals to the plant, some oxidise atmospheric methane. Minerals are sadly lacking in chemically farmed soils, their produce is also nutritionally depleted and consequently, so is our health. Why has cancer gone from being a rare disease affecting 1 in 100 people 50 years ago , to now affecting 1 in 2 men and one in 3 women ? Well, when did you see supermarkets selling compost grown food? Our immune systems are struggling to cope with a cocktail of pesticides . Also, food has a fraction of the nutrient it had 50 years ago. The great news is that by organic food growing we can not only reverse climate change, we can gain excellent health . We need only to follow two simple and rules: Do no harm ( to soil life with artificial fertilizers and pesticides) and return all organic wastes to the soil. Australians have the highest per capita carbon emissions in the world, with our habit of generating electricity from coal often sited as the cause. But conventional chemical farming generates a whopping 25% of Australia’s GHG emissions ( mainly due to the manufacture of fertilizer and pesticide) whilst 15% comes from coal power generation. So food, as we do it, is unsustainable as well as being harmful to ingest. By contrast organic or biological farms, which foster the soil life that balances our atmosphere, can buy time in a warming world . By refusing to buy industrial food you can reduce your carbon footprint AND have healthier children. By growing Permaculture food forests we can extract carbon from the air, make rain , increase biodiversity and resist disease. It truly is win, win, win, win. Excellent health is then the Earth’s gift to us. To learn more please phone Merri Bee Organic Farm on 97561408 to discuss film screening / presentation possiblilities . Also check out our website www.merribeeorganicfarm.net.au I facilitate lively discussions after giving a talk or showing a film on important health and environment issues. These life- changing events usually run for about 2 hours and are free.
