The Destruction of the Ice Caps Causes Water Levels to Rise

To raise awareness about carbon dioxide emissions, our group decided to do a symbolic simulation of what happens when people do things that pollute the environment with CO2. We filled a bucket labeled “Ice Cap” with approximately 350 cups of ice. We also had another bucket labeled “Ocean”. We then asked people passing through the Campus Center lobby if they had done anything that day that resulted in carbon emissions. If they confessed that they had, we made them melt some of the ice from the “Ice Cap” bucket into the “Ocean” bucket. We explained that it symbolized how, by taking a part in melting the polar ice caps, they had also raised the sea level. Before each person left, we asked each of them what they planned on changing about their lifestyle to reduce their carbon footprint.
