"Dirty Business: the Myth of Clean Coal" film screening
Sunday, 10 October, 2010 - 19:00 - 21:00
Several organizations are collaborating to screen the film, "Dirty Business: the Myth of Clean Coal" watch the film trailer here http://dirtybusinessthefilm.com/dirty-business-trailer. Kansas is featured in the film. Our purpose is to educate participants on the proposed Sunflower coal plant and how they can participate in the permitting process, write comments to send to the Kansas Department of Health & Environment on the permit, and discuss the upcoming public hearing. This is the last opportunity the public has to comment on a project that has been central to the ongoing debate over our state's energy future. The coal plant could have serious consequences for our state's long term health, environment, and economy, and citizens need to take this opportunity to voice their concerns.
The current permit application is another attempt by Sunflower Electric to gain approval for a coal-fired generating unit in Holcomb, KS. The first attempt was denied by the KDHE, and various legislative attempts to gain approval for the project were vetoed by then Gov. Kathleen Sebelius. The current Gov. Mark Parkinson agreed to allow one coal plant to proceed, but the EPA required public hearings to allow citizens to participate in the process, so we need to take this opportunity to be heard!
After the film screening, the event sponsors will give a short introduction to the work they're doing here locally. We will follow that by a Q&A with Scott Allegrucci from the Great Plains Alliance for Clean Energy, who has been closely involved in the campaign to oppose the boondoggle coal project since it was first proposed.
