WHY WE ENCOURAGE & SUPPORT COMMUNITY AND NEIGHBORHOOD GARDENS
===================================================

In his book "EAARTH - MAKING A LIFE ON A TOUGH NEW PLANET" Bill McKibben encourages a proliferation of community gardens, and he writes on page 182:

"... a recent study of sixty-three inner-city community gardens found that they were supplying more than produce. Donna Armstrong also found that "they changed local residents' attitude to their own neighborhood, resulting in improved care for properties, reduced littering, and increased pride in the locality." Community gardens, she found, "promoted social cohesion, and encouraged people to work cooperatively on a range of local needs, such as shared child-care." They brought people out of themselves and into the community -- they made those tough neighborhoods more resilient. Four in five of the people who worked the gardens said their mental health improved."

Because the Hayward Community Gardens (HCG) have been around for over three decades, and because HCG and a number of other existing smaller community gardens should be around for a long time to come, we decided to make them the central focus for Hayward's 10/10/10 event. As seeds are sown and sprout around the city, they and new gardens will sustain and grow community during the times ahead.

Therefore, our primary focus, as a solution for climate change is community rooted: Anyone and everyone can grow their own food, support the health of their communities, reduce greenhouse gases, be self-sufficient and help remove the dangerously high levels of carbon in the atmosphere down to the GOAL OF 350ppm.

High-yield organic agriculture is a powerful tool for carbon sequestration. The beauty of this solution is that everyone benefits. From an elderly resident in a neighborhood with a community food garden, to the densely populated city with the support of a sustainable commercial urban farm, MORE ORGANIC AGRICULTURE-BASED GREENING SUPPORTS PEOPLE AND PLANET.
