Ninety Percent of young people want action on global warming

Cross posted from Pushback.org.

Talk about a consensus: 90 percent of young people around the world think global leaders should do “whatever it takes” to tackle climate change, according to a new United Nations Environment Program survey.

The survey questioned 12-to-18 year-old’s in five countries (Brazil, India, Russia, South Africa, and the United States), all key players in upcoming international climate negotiations. Concern about global warming is highest in Brazil (96 percent) and South Africa (91 percent), followed by India (85 percent) and the U.S. (82 percent). Fewer youth in frigid Russia (70 percent) seem to be concerned, but they still constitute a clear majority.

Youth are also clearly connecting the dots between climate change and failed political leadership.

350 for Smarties

We speak a lot about connecting the 350 number to your own life. It helps make this abstract science into something with images, stories, and most importantly, people, behind it. Because 350 is a simple number, it's sort of a blank slate on which we can create this idea of global action and unity in the face of climate change. So, we're incredibly impressed with the people that have made this number a part of their lives, and one of the most impressive stories is Susan Hartsfield.

Susan emailed out of the blue with the subject “Urgent!” Somewhat frightened, I opened the email, and in it she said she was sending her new book on energy conservation to the printer very soon and needed to know if she could use the 350 logo. “Of course, absolutely,” I told her, and asked about the book and what she wanted to do with the logo. It turned out that Susan was so ready to help out that she was planting a 350 watermark on every page of her self published book! Talk about making the number pop out - I think that might even best Bill McKibben's idea of a temporary 350 tattoo on his forehead.

The book is called, “The Complete Guide to Energy Conservation for Smarties,” and she's got a ton of practical actions that people can take in their lives for both their planet and their pocketbook. Read more about it here, and if you track a copy down, don't forget to look for the 350 watermark. Amazing, thanks Susan!

40 Australian scientists sign on to 350 target, call for urgency in the fight against climate change

In response to recent reports that Australia cannot deal with the climate crisis in time, 40 leading scientists endorse the 350ppm target and urge Australia to take urgent action to address the issue. They call for urgent carbon cuts that lead us down the path to 350, fast-track development of a clean energy infrastructure and generating capacity, a tree-planting campaign and the development of carbon capture technology.

Check out this great video from the folks over at Climate Ride. My favorite is "Today I ride for cilmate, tomorrow I ride for the planet."

CAN-SA Calls For "Less Than" Two Degrees, Climate Equity Meet Underway

in

The Climate Action Network - South Asia (CAN-SA) is hosting the second Climate Equity Meet 2008 in Mamallapuram in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu. The four day meet, taking place only weeks before the UN's Conference of Parties (COP) in Poland is being attended by delegates from 48 countries. The past two days at the meet were pretty intensive and directed towards coming to a consensus on climate equity issues and policies and practices ensuring equity and sustainable development.

The first day at the Meet called for the urgent need to get the climate equity message outside the force working on the issue of climate change, out to the 'civilians' who now need to show a much greater degree of involvement. A dialogue on Equity followed a presentation on climate science in relation to equity by Bill Hare that called for setting an emission reduction of well below two degrees with much agreement from the delegates.

The second day today, saw discussions on adaptaton and effort-sharing on climate change in order to ensure a fair global deal. Everything from the need to get our eco-nomics right, to ensuring clean, carbon-free development in the less developed and developing countries was brought forward for discussions.

The next two days at the meet would be more to ensure a policy paper on climate equity across continents, before the COP Meet this December.

Latin America's youth take action on climate change

¡Saludos desde Bogota! This past weekend, over one hundred youth environmental leaders from all over Latin America came together in Bogotá, Colombia to meet each other, share strategies, and make plans to build a movement against climate change in their region. The meeting was the Seventh Latin American Meeting of Youth for the Environment and Sustainability organized by the Grupo Tayrona, a fifteen-year old non-profit with a large student network across Colombia. The theme of this year's meeting was "Actions against Climate Change", and brought youth of all ages and fields - from the 8 year old indigenous youth pioneering new organic farming techniques in the Putomayo region to postgraduate research students studying glacial melt in the Andes.

The participants heard from researchers, professors, fellow youth leaders, filmmakers, and Colombia's negotiator on climate change. The sessions stimulated great conversation, and led to the creation of a joint statement from all the youth participating, and plans for a regional reforestation campaign based in high schools and college campuses.

Many exciting things happening in this movement here - I wanted to give a quick update of my travels thus far, and will be sure to get up some video footage and more photos soon.

It's Official -- Yvo de Boer's Invitiation to the Candidates

Yvo de Boer is the Executive Secretary of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, the UN body that deals with the Kyoto Treaty and global warming. Last week we received his video invitation to the next US President-elect to attempt the UN climate meetings in Poland this December. So it's official the UN wants McCain and Obama there. Watch Yvo de Boer's video, and then post your own video invitation here: www.350.org/invite

We did it!

This week, we set the goal of sending over 20,000 invitations to Obama and McCain to attend the UN Climate Meetings before tonight's debate. Thanks to your help: we did it! There are a few hours left until the debate begins and we've already blown past 21,000 invites.

350.org supporters will be on the ground at tonight's debates in New York to present Obama and McCain a giant ticket to Poland. Think of it as a prize for the election's winner - like a trip to Disney Land, but way more important (and way colder).

Our team will post updates from the action here on the blog this evening, so check back. In the meantime, keep the invites coming - and if you've already signed, pass on the invite to your friends and family.

Congrats again to all our friends and allies for breaking the 20,000 mark in style!
