Work Party in Edinburgh

Sunday, 10 October, 2010 - 10:00 - 23:00

In Edinburgh, we are planning 3 climate action projects for 10/10/10.

(1) CARROTMOB, 18:00 - 23:00
Come and have a drink and help fight climate change!

We are inviting people to join us for food and drinks on Sunday 10/10/10 from 6pm, for a Carrotmob at the Mercat Bar on 28 West Maitland Street, Haymarket EH12 5DX.

The Mercat is the winner of our 'Carrotmob' competition, so let's mob it with business on 10/10/10!

What is a Carrotmob?
Carrotmob is a type of consumer activism in which businesses compete at how environmentally responsible they can be, and then a network of consumers (the 'mob') spends money to support whichever business makes the strongest offer. It is the opposite of a boycott.

What did the competition involve?
Over the past few months, we invited Edinburgh pubs to place bids that
involved committing themselves to invest in energy efficiency upgrades -
all they had to do was pledge to reinvest a percentage of the additional revenues they would make during the ‘mob’ on the evening of 10/10/10 (should they be the winning pub). By 'additional revenues', we mean over & above what the pubs would normally make on a Sunday evening.

Why did the Mercat win?
The Mercat Bar was the highest bidder. They won the competition by pledging
to reinvest 20% of the additional revenues from the evening into energy
efficiency retrofits.

Please spread the word and invite your friends! :-)

(2) CONSERVATION EVENT (for students), 10:00-17:00

Edinburgh Uni Transition group is joining forces with "Dirty Weekenders" (the conservation society) to have a big day of action. We are meeting at 10am outside the Pleasance Sports Hall to catch a bus to Beeslack House Ponds near Penicuik for a carbon reducing conservation project.

There is lots to do here and we will be removing the invasive Japanese Knotweed and planting healthy oxygenating Water-crowfoot plants in a stretch of the nearby River Esk. We'll also be removing litter from the pond and strengthening the banks of the pond. It promises to be great fun as well as a really worthwhile project!

Bring along a drink, warm clothes and suitable footwear (wellies if you have them!). Sandwiches will be provided but bring along more food to share if you can :-)

We aim to be back by 5pm in order to head to the Mercat bar to celebrate the fact that they have won the Carrotmob green business competition.

For those who can't make it to the project will also be showing Mark Edward's fantastic Hard Rain exhibition for the last time in George Square from 10.10am. It is well worth a look so head down if you haven't already.

(3) TREE PLANTING IN FIFE, 10:00-17:00 (now fully booked)

Come and help us plant up to 350 native species trees at the Inzievar Woodland, a disused open-cast coal mine, near Oakley in Fife. Each new tree we plant will help sequester 37.5 t CO2 over the next 100 years. The event is run by New Caledonian Woodlands, a not-for-profit social enterprise.
