350 Actions for Holyoke

Nuestras Raíces and partners are organizing “350 Actions for Holyoke,” a citywide campaign to reduce Holyoke’s carbon footprint. Local organizations and residents have pledged to initiate creative actions to reduce our use of fossil fuels and to lower carbon emissions within the city. Some of these initiatives include the YMCA’s putting 22 new bicycles on the road adding to their weekly bicycle riding program, Nuestras Raices RootsUp Program installing a solar hot water system into a low-income housing unit, and the Holyoke Food & Fitness Policy Council supporting an “edible park” (a new community perennial garden) in the Flats neighborhood.
Nuestras Raíces is a Holyoke-based non-profit organization whose environmental program works to identify environmental risks in the community and to build community capacity to address those risks. The Environmental Program at Nuestras Raíces is organizing “350 Actions for Holyoke” with the hope that by committing to these green actions, local residents and organizations will help Holyoke on the path towards environmental sustainability and will contribute to improving the global environment.
On October 10, 2010, Nuestras Raíces will celebrate these contributions and recognize the individuals and organizations taking action to lower Holyoke’s carbon footprint and moving Holyoke towards a more sustainable, energy efficient future. This celebration event will take place at the Mi Plaza Restaurant from 12 to 1 pm on October 10, 2010. Nuestras Raíces will also be at the Holyoke Canal Walk Fair from 1:30 to 4pm on 10/10/10.
