Hungry for Change
Sunday, 10 October, 2010 - 07:00
The name is a little cheesy but essentially what I'm doing is beginning a hunger strike on the Parliament building's doorsteps.
I'm asking for four major actions/policies for the Harper government to implement based on NASA scientist James Hansen's recommendations:
1) On February 6th 2011 (Feb. 6th was the date Stephen Harper was sworn in as Prime Minister) in Canada we need a flat carbon emissions price applied across all fossil fuels at the source. The carbon price (fee, tax) must be substantial and rise continually. This should be done using a fee-and-dividend approach where funds must be distributed back to the citizens. So as the carbon fee rises the dividend will also rise correspondingly. In the fee-and dividend approach every action an individual takes to help reduce emissions will be significant unlike the cap-and-trade approach. A rising Carbon fee is the most effective way to phase out fossil fuel use and will allow for a fair competition with energy efficiency and renewable energy like solar and wind power.
2) There needs to be a rapid phaseout of coal use here and around the world. Therefore there should be no coal-fired-power plants being built in Canada.
3) In Canada by AT LEAST 2020 there needs to be a phaseout of all energy coming from coal-fired power plants.
4) We must stop digging for and using unconventional fossil fuels such as tar sands and shale oil that are as dirty and polluting as coal. These need to be left in the ground.
There are a multitudinous amount of other actions and issues that could be dealt with and included but I believe these four need to be the first steps our government needs to take in order to fight climate change.
Without our government taking these four actions promptly and making a conversion to clean renewable energy our children will inherit a planet that is not habitable.
A very superficial description of who I am: I'm Female, 23 yrs old, I am a high school biology and phys. ed teacher, I'm an activist who is sick of watching the earth's life support systems failing with no response from our governing bodies.
It's important that you know I am very happy but I AM prepared to starve to death to further this cause...and the cause is: the greatest challenge humanity has ever faced.
Peace!
