Low Carbon Fest
Greetings from La Paz, Bolivia.
I am a Waterbury Center, Vermont resident; arrived yesterday to La paz.
Just ambling around with Bolivian friends we noticed a large number of display kiosks in the median accross the large state university, titled 10.10.10.350.
I had a wonderful conversation with Monica who was in one of them: this particular group of university students are working to prevent destruction in the Madidi National Park, a jewel in the Bolivian Amazonia which is being threatened by three plans which are being considered: a large road to be built THROUGH the park to promote tourism, a dam being planned in Brazil which would flood a large portion of the park, petroleum companies proposing to drill in the park. She told me each kiosk had a different student group, from many Bolivian Universities, with different environmental objectives working in coordination with each other. She reported that despite rain, they had had a large number of interested visitors asking to be informed. I wish we had been there earlier but we came at the time the displays were being dismantled.
It was an impressive awareness raising and lobbying effort.
WOW!
