Building Backyard Gardens!

Our success on 10/10/10 was unprecedented! In five hours, nearly forty volunteers helped establish seven gardens in homes throughout East Palo Alto, an eighth garden here at the office in our growing community garden, and a perennial herb garden and pollinator garden at the office to round out ten amazing new sustainable gardens in our community!

On top of that, volunteers covered over an eight of an acre at our office with sheet mulch, laying the groundwork for what will soon become a prolific demonstration garden modeling sustainable and productive gardening techniques here in East Palo Alto.

I have received emails and phone calls from thankful gardeners, excited about their new source of healthy, sustainable, affordable vegetables (and even one call from an envious neighbor curious how she can get involved in backyard gardening!).

East Palo Alto is now ten steps closer to ensuring everyone has affordable access to healthy, sustainable, and culturally appropriate food!
