Postcards for Politicians - a global community action
Sunday, 10 October, 2010 (All day)
Send local area 'the weather is changing, wish you were here' postcards showing or representing your own home town, region or community to your political leaders urging them to take effective action to significantly reduce green house grass emissions by 2020.
Using local area postcards shows where home is - and keeps the message brief and to the point :) So a global citizens' plea for climate change action action sent on a postcard from home - showing where home is!
Importantly, this 10-10-10 action has a special focus on sending postcards to representatives of the key countries taking part in the UN negotiations in Cancun. If your country is not one of the key nations (US and Chine in particualr), we suggest sending postcards to your local US and Chinese ambassadors, and local representatives of other countries such as Brazil and India. The messages should be friendly encouraging noting the disappointment of Copenhagen and expressing hope that the spirit of global cooperation and fairness will be much stronger for Cancun, as the science says time really is running out. Of course they know all this - but the cards will add a personal dimension :-)
Your postcards could be commercial ‘corner-store’ tourism postcards for the local town or area – or hand-made. The keen who are part of local 10-10-10 action groups might collect cards written by others in their community ; eg by running a stall where passing people could write cards (see www.postcards4pollies.org).
This action follows on from the first Postcards-for-Pollies campaign here in Australia, recently initiated to complement and reinforce the Walk Against Warming campaign being held across the country on August 15 2010. The campaign has participation from many of the more than 100 Australian climate action networks.
Here in Australia a politician is often referred to a 'pollie' and this 10-10-10 action is part of a campaign by a grass-roots group called postcards4pollies:
So please join us in becomming card carrying, writing and posting lobbyists on behalf of the climate we know!
