GreenWeek Houston
Sunday, 10 October, 2010 - 12:30 - 17:00
The USGBC Emerging Professionals Houston, Houston Green Scene, and The Last Organic Outpost will be hosting a 350 day of action on 10/10/10 to kick off "GreenWeek Houston," which also includes the No Impact Curriculum and Experiment, the GreenFest at the Emile Street Community Farm, and a potluck picnic.
"GreenWeek Houston" is a week-long celebration focused on community service, climate awareness, sustainable choices and the merits of mindful, sustainable living while educating and encouraging Houstonians to preserve, conserve and enhance our city.
Our 350-specific action will be in partnership with Covenant Community Capital Corporation and ProjectRESPECT. Our volunteers will help beautify the Greater Fifth Ward with a trash clean-up, tree plantings, landscaping, small painting projects, pedestrian bridge clean-up, and work at an urban farm. Registration starts at 12:30 PM at Finnigan Park (corner of Calles and Sonora St.). We will be taking our group picture around 1 PM, so don't be late! Please e-mail us at 350houston@gmail.com, so we can keep track of all our participants. Non-registered volunteers are welcome, but we want to make sure we have enough equipment and work sites for everyone.
The "Get to Work" Day will not be the end of our 350 action though! We are implementing the 5-day No Impact Curriculum, inspired by the film "No Impact Man," in Houston area schools to teach students about serious environmental issues AND holding evening workshops for adults who want to participate in the No Impact Experiment Week - a carbon cleanse challenge that will help them reduce their carbon footprint. As if this weren't enough, we've also invited the No Impact Man himself, Colin Beavan, to help us spread the message of 350 and teach everyone about the importance of individual action! He will be in Houston on 10/15-10/16.
If you're interested in volunteering on 10/10/10 or living "no impact" in Houston during GreenWeek Houston, please contact us! Details will be sent out to those who RSVP to our action.
