White House Work Party and Solar Delivery
Sunday, 10 October, 2010 - 13:00 - 14:30
**TRANSIT ALERT**: The WMATA reports that the McPherson Square and Farragut West metro stations (serving the White House) will be closed on Sunday. Rally attendees are advised to use Farragut North station on the Red Line to reach the event.
NOTE: In addition to this White House Event, be sure to check out all of the other great 10.10 events in DC, as described on the "Event Website" below. ALSO: word is out that 350.org's founder, Bill McKibben plans to attend some of these! We look forward to seeing you all there!
Come one, come all! Let’s give President Obama a hand in making the White House green. This will be a BIG job, and we'll need a lot of help from other concerned global citizens who care about Earth's (or “Eaarth’s”) future. On Sunday, October 10th, 2010 at 1pm, GWEN* will be helping to coordinate a national White House work party and solar delivery in Washington, DC. We are working with a coalition of more than 30 local and national climate-concerned groups, the DC 10.10 Coalition, as described below.
We are inviting local, national and international climate organizations and concerned citizens to symbolically help President and Michelle Obama “green up” the White House. We’ll be bringing insulation, CF and LED light bulbs, solar panels (like President Carter once had, only better), and a wind turbine. We’ll be suggesting bike racks, more bike lanes, geothermal power and more to President and Michelle Obama. Suggestions are welcome.
NEW! Among the climate heroes speaking at this event are famed climatologist Dr. James Hansen, illustrious Bush Administration climate science whistle blower Rick Piltz, celebrated Climate Progress blogger Joe Romm, and acclaimed "Plan B 4.0" author Lester Brown. Other star speakers include Reverend Lennox Yearwood, Phaedra Ellis-Lamkins, and DC Councilmember Mary Cheh.
While one goal is making the White House green, to serve as an example for other Americans, our key request of President Obama is to please be a strong, protective, proactive leader. We want him to tell misinformed citizens about the real, serious and urgent need to deal with climate change. In a democracy, citizens must understand why we need to rapidly shift to non-fossil fuels in order to forestall devestating consequences for us all in the coming years.
YOU can also encourage President Obama to lead at www.whitehouse.gov (use the "Contact Us" button in the upper right) or by signing our "Please Educate and Lead" petition to Obama at http://www.change.org/global_warming_education_network. Our goal is to get 10,000 signatures, and we are well beyond the half-way point! (Yes, every signature helps, so DO it!)
Our plans are evolving, so check back often. Again, we urge interested groups to contact us about collaboration. We have found from past experience that cooperation and focus can add synergy and power to human endeavors. So, let’s all cooperate and focus on our officially chosen leader, Barack Obama! We encourage this focus beyond 10.10, well into 2011 and 2012.
