Prime Minister Carney is trying to rush ahead with legislation that would gut environmental protections and undermine labour laws so that mega-corporations can profit while our communities and the planet suffer the consequences.
What makes Bill C-39 so dangerous?
Creates federal destruction zones:
Cabinet would have the power to create “regions of national interest” where industrial mega-projects like pipelines can be automatically approved, no matter the cost to our communities, the environment, or our future.
Prioritizes profit over people:
This law drops environmental assessment requirements for new pipelines. It imposes a one-year timeline that forces a rushed approval of new projects. And it gives cabinet the power to “pre-approve” a pipeline before we know the route. It’s clear that Big Oil will benefit while we pay the price.
Threatens the future of orcas, and other endangered species:
Ministers would have sweeping powers to exempt companies from abiding critical legislation including the Species at Risk Act, the Navigable Waters Act, and the Fisheries Act. Every time these exemptions would be considered, opportunities for profit would trump survivability concerns for endangered wildlife like the critically endangered Southern Resident Killer Whales.
Prevents workers from standing up for their rights:
It’s not just environmental protections that are under attack for "getting in the way of building major projects,” apparently, it’s also workers, whose constitutional right to strike is threatened under this law.
