Prime Minister Carney is receiving accolades in response to his speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos earlier this week<\/span><\/strong>.\u00a0<\/strong>I\u2019ll admit it, it was satisfying to hear Carney call out US hegemony and economic bullying.<\/p>\n

But I\u2019m also worried about the path Carney\u2019s forecasting for Canada\u2019s future. We should all be worried.<\/p>\n

Buried within Carney\u2019s speech was a celebration of the action he\u2019s taken to roll back corporate taxes, undermine environmental protections, and fast-track climate-destroying projects.<\/strong><\/p>\n

We know how this story plays out. We know that this speech falls within the rhythm of Carney\u2019s regular pattern of using US economic bullying as an excuse to accelerate new fossil fuel projects.\u00a0That\u2019s why we have our work cut out for us in 2026 and we need your support. Parliament\u2019s returning next week, but 2026 is already off to a rocky start.<\/p>\n

Unmasked Power Grabs:\u00a0<\/strong>The federal government is poised to pass Bill C-15, an omnibus bill that would give Big Oil and megacorporations the ability to bypass environmental protections, labour laws, and Indigenous rights. This power grab would\u00a0allow federal ministers to\u00a0<\/strong>exempt entities from federal law<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0to advance projects and activities deemed to be \u201cin the public interest.\u201d<\/p>\n

Criminalizing Peaceful Protest:\u00a0<\/strong>Another thing that\u2019s on the cusp of passing in the House of Commons is Bill C-9, an alarming piece of legislation that would criminalize peaceful protest. C-9 would make it easier to target Indigenous land defenders and the climate justice movement. This should sound alarm bells for anyone who cares about our democratic principles and believes in the power of social movements to build a more peaceful, safe, and just world.<\/p>\n

A Red Carpet for Big Oil:\u00a0<\/strong>2025 ended on an alarming note. Massive rollback of climate policies, promises to build new pipelines, and new subsidies for Big Oil billionaires. Now that everything fossil fuel lobbyists have been asking for is on the table, it\u2019s just a matter of time before they start racing to build new pipelines and megaprojects that would devastate our climate. Indeed, the Government of Alberta has already begun to propagandize the Northwest Coast Tar Sands Pipeline.<\/p>\n
