{"id":175522619,"date":"2026-05-12T17:15:47","date_gmt":"2026-05-12T17:15:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/350.org\/canada\/?p=175522619"},"modified":"2026-05-14T18:12:07","modified_gmt":"2026-05-14T18:12:07","slug":"fasttrackdestruction","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/350.org\/canada\/fasttrackdestruction\/he","title":{"rendered":"Carney&#8217;s new plan to Fast-Track Destruction would make Stephen Harper Blush"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Last Friday afternoon, the Carney government quietly dropped a major announcement that they hoped we wouldn\u2019t even notice.<\/strong><strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The feds unveiled proposals for \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/one-canadian-economy\/services\/simplifying-canada-process\/engagement-supporting-timely-decision-making\/getting-major-projects-built-canada-discussion-paper-proposed-legislative-regulatory-policy-reforms.html\">Getting Major Projects Built in Canada<\/a>,\u201d a series of legislative changes that make it easier for mega-corporations to profit while our communities and the planet suffer the consequences.<sup>1<\/sup><\/p>\n<p><strong>Let me break it down.\u00a0<\/strong>Here\u2019s why we\u2019re alarmed by this new plan to fast-track the approval for pipelines, mines, nuclear facilities, and other mega-projects:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>A Free Pass for Pipelines:\u00a0<\/strong>Companies proposing new pipelines would no longer need to pass an Environmental Impact Assessment prior to their project receiving approval<\/li>\n<li><strong>Federal Destruction Zones:\u00a0<\/strong>Taking a page out of Doug Ford and Pierre Poilievre\u2019s book, Carney wants to create special Federal Economic Zones where all new development is \u201cpre-approved\u201d<\/li>\n<li><strong>Habitat Decimation:\u00a0<\/strong>This proposal seeks to suspend the Fisheries Act and Species at Risk Act that are critical laws created to protect vulnerable habitats<\/li>\n<li><strong>Corporations First, Communities Last:\u00a0<\/strong>If passed, Carney\u2019s changes will allow companies to start construction while projects are still in review, meanwhile they will rush through consultations with Indigenous peoples and communities.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Big Oil doesn\u2019t need any more gifts at the expense of everyday Canadians.\u00a0<\/strong>Fossil fuel companies are already gouging Canadians at the pump to fill their own pockets with windfall wartime profits.<\/p>\n<p><strong>At a time when we need the government to tax Big Oil\u2019s wartime profits and accelerate an Indigenous-led renewable energy transition, this plan instead rewards oil and gas companies while endangering our communities, fuelling the climate crisis, and locking us into reliance on volatile fossil fuels.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Here\u2019s the thing.
