URGENT: Tell Azerbaijan – Last Chance to See Progress at COP29!

The UN climate conference, COP29 is almost over – and there’s a real risk it will fail to deliver an ambitious and fair climate finance goal.

The COP29 host country, Azerbaijan, is failing to show the leadership the world needs in these crucial climate discussions. Instead, they continue to protect the interests of their fossil fuel industry.

In this decisive moment, the COP29 president, Mukhtar Babayev must step up right now. Azerbaijan must secure an ambitious and fair funding goal for the energy transition, but now they’re dropping the ball. It’s up to us to hold them accountable.

We know the Azerbaijan COP29 Presidency is sensitive to public pressure. Let’s send them a message on every possible channel so that they can’t miss it – it’s Azerbaijan’s last chance to not fail people and planet.

The world needs a new climate finance goal to come out of COP29 – building on last year’s commitment to transition away from fossil fuels. Mukhtar Babayev, get COP29 back on track! No more excuses, no more delays, it’s time.
Mukhtar Babayev, why are you and Azerbaijan even hosting COP29 if all you’re doing is greenwashing, supporting the fossil fuel industry, and delaying climate negotiations? We need an ambitious finance goal: Last chance to step up or step down and hand over the reins to the real climate leaders.
Azerbaijan’s own climate plans use dodgy tricks to continue business as usual: drilling for more fossil fuels. You must do better and stop dropping the ball at COP29 – time to get that finance outcome that vulnerable nations need!

  • The Azerbaijani COP president is delaying real action by greenwashing.
  • Azerbaijan’s climate initiatives appear like they’re doing some climate action, but in reality they don’t talk of moving away from fossil fuels or increasing renewable energy.
  • Azerbaijan ignores phasing out fossil fuels and its climate plans seem to benefit the fossil fuel industry.
  • Azerbaijan created a bogus ‘climate fund’ to try to greenwash their state fossil fuel industry.
  • Azerbaijan is a petrostate which is ramping up expansion of fossil fuels.
  • Earlier this year, the Azerbaijani President, Ilham Aliyev, even called fossil fuels ‘a gift from the gods.’
  • Azerbaijan’s own climate plan uses dodgy tricks to continue business as usual: drilling for more fossil fuels.
  • As hosts of COP29, it’s Azerbaijan’s job to make sure COP29 ends with real funding commitments, and replaces coal, oil and gas everywhere by 2050 with renewable energy.
  • Azerbaijan must get world leaders to set an international funding goal to help communities cope with climate change and switch to renewable energy
