Many imagine opposition may come strongest from anti-environmental or conservative forces. And that may be true.<\/p>\n<p>But it\u2019s also the case that there has been fervent opposition to renewable energy projects from:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>NIMBY folks<\/strong>\u00a0(with real worries about the sound of wind turbines or poor use of land for solar fields to trumped up worries about solar panels leaking and causing pollution or wind turbines killing more birds than they save);<\/li>\n<li><strong>Folks worried about \u201cgood land use<\/strong>\u201d (whenever you build a project, folks compare it to what\u00a0<em>otherwise\u00a0<\/em>might be on the land \u2014 and they may critique renewable projects for not fulfilling some hopes\/goals);<\/li>\n<li><strong>Environmentalists<\/strong>\u00a0(they may be worried about monocultural landscapes with a sea of solar panels or other impacts to a particular project);<\/li>\n<li><strong>Regular citizens whipped up in opposition<\/strong>\u00a0(maybe because they\u2019ve been told this will increase their electric bills\u2026).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A New Zealand campaigner tells the story:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>In a rural town a small opposition stopped a community wind farm from going ahead.\u00a0Weirdly that opposition were mostly environmental activists who had been involved in protesting coal mining (so obvious allies to a clean energy project). My analysis after having heard both sides of the story is that they were offended that they (or the community more broadly)\u00a0weren\u2019t\u00a0consulted enough and had concerns about how community funding was used\u2026\u00a0Concerns weren\u2019t\u00a0addressed and the initiator of the project.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Eventually, the citizens concerns grew. A group did a massive misinformation pamphlet drops claiming environmental damage from the project. And with a divided community, the final nail in the coffin was council not granting consent.<\/p>\n<p>This is not a one-time concern. Across the globe, there is an increasingly coordinated opposition to climate solutions. And to stop a project, you don\u2019t have to convince everyone \u2014 you just have to sow a lot of doubt.<\/p>\n<p>So many of the very same NIMBY tools climate activists have attempted to stop fossil fuel projects can now be turned and used against us. (Although in our case, we don\u2019t have multi-million dollar budgets to advance our case.)<\/p>\n<p>A report from National Public Radio in the US reports:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>[M]isleading ideas about renewable energy come from groups with ties to the fossil fuel industry, like the Texas Public Policy Foundation. The foundation recently released a\u00a0<a class=\"wpel-icon-right\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=vlFwRIWRwf0\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">film trailer\u00a0<\/a>for an anti-offshore wind group in Massachusetts that features multiple falsehoods, including the\u00a0<a class=\"wpel-icon-right\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nwf.org\/Latest-News\/Press-Releases\/2021\/03-08-21-Vineyard-Wind-EIS\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">untrue statement<\/a>\u00a0that the proposed project didn\u2019t do any environmental impact assessments and the incorrect idea that offshore wind projects \u201chaven\u2019t worked anywhere in the world.\u201d The Texas Public Policy Foundation did not respond to a request for comment.<\/p>\n<p>But Facebook is one of the biggest drivers of misleading content about renewable energy, says Josh Fergen, a researcher at the University of Minnesota Duluth.\u00a0<a class=\"wpel-icon-right\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S2214629621003170\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">Last fall, Fergen and his colleagues published a paper<\/a>\u00a0looking at the Facebook posts of Kitson\u2019s group and another large wind opposition group, about 90 kilometers east, fighting the Republic Wind Farm.<\/p>\n<p><cite>National Public Radio,\u00a0<a class=\"wpel-icon-right\" href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2022\/03\/28\/1086790531\/renewable-energy-projects-wind-energy-solar-energy-climate-change-misinformation\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">Misinformation is derailing renewable energy projects across the United States<\/a><\/cite><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Because much of that fear is being stoked by right-wing efforts who have other agendas, it can be very risky to discount the people raising the concerns themselves.<\/p>\n<p>But those concerns need to be addressed \u2014 and quickly before they blow out of proportion. The sooner you can do these the better:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Reach out to key individuals in many sectors<\/strong>, including folks representing \u201cgood government,\u201d land use, environmentalist, city\/municipal government to assuage concerns;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Listen very carefully to people showing doubt \u2014 and be ready to give them factual information right away;<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Invite concerned residents to take tours\u00a0<\/strong>of other locations where they can talk to people who have had good experiences with solar\/wind;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Watch local pages on Facebook (or other social media platforms) and be ready to respond quickly;<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Produce your own local material on social media to advance the case;<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Be a trust-worthy source: Do not over-state your case<\/strong>\u00a0\u2014 do not downplay \u201cthere\u2019s no impact\u201d and instead acknowledge what the impact would be; do not claim \u201clots of jobs\u201d if your project would only bring a few \u2014 or just temporarily;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Associate your project with local community events<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Renewable energy campaigners are often surprised who comes out against their projects.
