One of the planet&#39;s hardest working 350 campaigners, Jinty McTavish, was elected to the city council in Dunedin, New Zealand last year, and in one of her first council sessions last night she&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.odt.co.nz\/news\/dunedin\/146099\/passions-aroused-project-fast-tracked\">persuaded<\/a>&nbsp;her fellow board members to speed up implementation of the city&#39;s global warming action plan.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><meta content=\"text\/html;charset=UTF-8\" http-equiv=\"Content-Type\" \/><\/p>\n<div style=\"font-family: Arial, Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 12px; color: rgb(34, 34, 34); background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255); \"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"sites\/all\/files\/screen_shot_2011-02-01_at_4.53.44_pm.jpg\" class=\"imagecache imagecache-polaroid_default imgupload imgupl_floating_left \" src=\"\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/4\/imagecache\/polaroid_default\/screen_shot_2011-02-01_at_4.53.44_pm.jpg\" style=\"cursor: default; float: left; padding-right: 2px; \" title=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Not speeding up the work, in the face of new climate science, &quot;would be&nbsp;doing an injustice to the future generations I&#39;m here to try and represent,&quot; Jinty said, carrying the day. A great place, and a real leader.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, in Australia, we&#39;re watching with bated breath as extremely dangerous Tropical Cyclone Yasi&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wunderground.com\/blog\/JeffMasters\/comment.html?entrynum=1738\">bears down<\/a>&nbsp;on already soaked Queensland.<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"sites\/all\/files\/cycloneyasi.gif\" class=\"imagecache imagecache-Large_500_pixels_wide imgupload imgupl_floating_none \" src=\"\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/4\/imagecache\/Large_500_pixels_wide\/cycloneyasi.gif\" style=\"cursor: default; float: none; display: block; \" title=\"\" \/>\n<p>The surrounding ocean waters are the warmest ever-recorded, which means the storm will be powerful, and carrying lots of rain; the only ironic blessing, say meteorologists, is that it may be moving fast enough that the rains won&#39;t linger for too long over the region&#39;s most flooded areas.
