Right now, Export Development Canada is considering lending millions of public dollars to TC Energy to build the Coastal Gaslink pipeline. It is absolutely unacceptable for public money to go towards the Coastal Gaslink pipeline.
This project is opposed by Wet’suwet’en Hereditary Chiefs and is in direct violation of their Indigenous rights and title over their ancestral homelands. Earlier this month, militarized police officers violently arrested peaceful Wet’suwet’en land defenders and matriarchs who were protecting their unceded lands from this disastrous project. This violent assault has triggered national solidarity demonstrations across the country.
Giving a loan to TC Energy would be a disaster. Canada can’t say it’s working towards a peaceful resolution in this moment, nor that it’s pursuing reconciliation if it hands millions of public dollars to the corporation and project that has sparked a national uprising. Tell the President of Export Development Canada; Mary Ng, Minister of Export; and Prime Minister Trudeau to do the right thing: put Indigenous rights first and reject this loan.
