Washington, D.C. – In support of Senator Bernie Sanders’ Just Rebuild for Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands Act, 350.org Executive Director May Boeve said:
“In the wake of devastating climate change-fueled hurricanes Maria and Irma, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands have epitomized resilience, not only through weathering these superstorms, but also navigating the treacherous crosscurrents of congressional neglect and executive ineptitude.
“The people of Puerto Rico need clean drinking water and Trump throws them paper towels instead while Congress saddles them with boatloads of debt. With the lights out and safe water and food still scarce, corporate vultures are circling, eager to pick off essential public services like the electrical grid for profit-driven privatization. We refuse to allow this to become the new normal in the age of runaway inequality and climate change. This bill proposed by Senator Sanders takes a just route, by empowering the people of Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands to build locally-controlled, resilient and renewable energy solutions. Through this approach, we can fortify communities to weather the storms wrought by a world in political and climatic crisis.”
