350.org on Rick Perry hearing for Energy Secretary

Washington, DC — Today, the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee is holding a hearing for former Governor Rick Perry, President-elect Trump’s appointment for Secretary of Energy.

In response, 350.org Executive Director May Boeve issued the following statement:

“If confirmed, Rick Perry will do everything he can to fight the keep it in the ground movement, undoubtedly putting science and our climate at risk. He’s a pro-pipeline candidate, nominated to run a pipeline-approving agency. Dakota Access is just the beginning. The science on climate change is clear that for a livable future, we can’t afford any new fossil fuel extraction projects. Trump’s entire fossil fuel billionaire cabinet can expect oil, coal, and gas infrastructure to be met with resistance at every turn.”

Last week, people across the country rallied at U.S. Senators’ in-state offices for the #DayAgainstDenial, calling for their elected officials to reject Trump’s climate denial cabinet, including Perry. The movement to keep fossil fuels in the ground, led by Indigenous Peoples and community activists, has demonstrated mass public resistance to fossil fuel exploitation of our public lands, and has halted the Keystone XL and the Dakota Access pipelines.
