“As Europe swelters through an unprecedented heatwave, this landmark ruling against TotalEnergies sends a powerful message: fossil fuel companies can no longer evade responsibility for the climate damage they cause. The court has made clear that TotalEnergies is accountable not only for emissions from its own operations, but also for the vast majority of its pollution generated when its oil and gas products are burned.

For decades, fossil fuel companies have attempted to shift responsibility onto consumers while continuing to expand oil and gas production and rake in record profits. The court has firmly rejected that argument. Alongside recent rulings against Shell, ENI and RWE, this decision marks another major step forward in holding polluters accountable for fueling the climate crisis.”

**Notes to editors:**

In its ruling, the Paris Judicial Court found that TotalEnergies’ duty of vigilance extends to emissions generated by the use of its oil and gas products (Scope 3 emissions), which account for nearly 90% of the company’s total carbon footprint. The court has ordered TotalEnergies to revise its climate vigilance plan within six months and include appropriate measures to reduce these emissions. Failure to comply could result in the company being found liable again and facing further legal condemnation.
