350.org responds to the UK Government’s welfare cuts
17 March 2025. London, UK. Prime Minister Keir Starmer is facing backlash over his decision to make significant cuts to disability benefits. Many, including most recently Diane Abbott MP, are instead calling for the introduction of a wealth tax to help cover the gaps in the budget.
“If the government needs money, it should start with the billionaires and multi-millionaires who have more than they could ever spend. A tax on the super-rich could fund disability benefits, the NHS, and investments in renewable energy and mass insulation—keeping bills down and homes warm. Instead, ministers are pushing cruel and wildly unpopular benefit cuts that harm those who need support the most. It’s a political choice, and they’re choosing to protect extreme wealth over public good.”
