May 1, 2017 Supports May Day Actions Across the Country

Brooklyn, NY – Two days after hundreds of thousands of people marched in Washington D.C and across the country for climate, jobs, and justice at the highly successful Peoples Climate March, people are taking the streets again to stand with immigrants, workers, and communities of color on May 1st, International Workers Day. On this historic day, there will be rallies, marches, and strikes around the country and the world. In the United States, there will be acts of civil disobedience, strikes, and boycotts to send a message to the Trump administration that communities stand with workers and immigrants who have been targeted, having faced increased raids and been subject to racist, anti-immigrant rhetoric throughout Donald Trump’s presidential campaign and his presidency.

May Boeve, executive director of said in a statement:

“We know that the fight to protect our climate is inherently connected to the life and dignity of workers, migrants, and communities of color. We saw this deep commitment to our communities at the Peoples Climate March this past Saturday and this continues on International Workers Day. May Day is a marker of the struggles of workers who face unprecedented attacks on wages, benefits, and workplace safety–struggles that inform our push for an 100% clean energy economy that works for all.

“Working class people, immigrants, indigenous peoples, and communities of color are the frontlines of the climate crisis. They have contributed the least to climate disruption and have the least resources to shoulder the burden. The attacks on our communities are not siloed, so neither are our responses. On this May Day, we recommit to standing strong against all assaults on our frontline communities. Together, we will fight back against the Trump Administration that has propped up the fossil fuel industry, empowered climate deniers, scapegoated the most vulnerable, and prioritized profit over people.”
