350 Canada Responds to Announcement of First Ministers Meeting Ahead of COP21

Ottawa — In response to the news that Prime Minister Trudeau will host a First Minister’s meeting ahead of the Paris Climate Talks to assess Canada’s current climate targets, 350 Canada, who recently hosted four days of sit-ins at the PM’s residence, issued the following statement:

“For four days last week, hundreds of people from across Canada staged sit-ins at the Prime Minister’s residence, calling for for bold climate action, and it seems now that the Prime Minister is listening. Calling a First Ministers meeting ahead of the Paris Climate talks to open up Canada’s current emissions reductions commitments is a commendable first step in strengthening the country’s contribution to the global climate talks.  However, we still need Prime Minister Trudeau to prove that he’s listening to people and not polluters. The clearest way he can show he’s serious about keeping global warming below 2°C would be to commit to a freeze on new tar sands expansion.” – Cameron Fenton, Canadian Tar Sands Organizer with 350.org.
