350 Responds to Trump Administration’s Revocation of California Auto Emissions Rules

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

September 18, 2019

New York, NY – The Trump administration today announced that it will revoke California’s state authority to set auto emissions rules that surpass federal standards. The announcement came as Trump visits the site of his border wall prototype. This comes days before millions of people around the world gear up for Friday’s Global Climate Strikes.

350.org’s Executive Director May Boeve gave the following statement:

“The Trump administration’s relentless rollbacks of climate protection policies is one more reason communities from California to New York are escalating pressure against fossil fuel corporations and their allies, during the Climate Strikes Week of Action. And why, in two days on September 20th, hundreds of thousands of people will take to the streets to demand transformative action on September 20th.

Donald Trump’s audacity in rolling back a state’s authority to set its own emission standard is a dangerous precedent for the country. It is in fact the federal government that should match California’s emission standards, rather than the other way around. This spiteful assault hurts California’s residents first and foremost, and it’s imperative that Governor Gavin Newsom and elected officials at all levels take a stand and go even further in their commitments to real climate leadership. Trump’s climate policy, much like his border wall, is regressive, harmful, and  lacking in common sense.”
