_(New York, NY)_ Yesterday, the American Medical Association (AMA), a national organization empowering physicians, residents, and students, adopted a resolution “to end all financial investments or relationships (divestment) with companies that generate the majority of their income from the exploration for, production of, transportation of, or sale of fossil fuels.”

AMA joins the British Medical Association, Canadian Medical Association, and the World Medical Association in this action.

In response, **350.org co-founder Bill McKibben said,** “The American Medical Association played a crucial role in changing public perception of the tobacco industry, and now they’re doing it again. They know that the greatest threat to public health in the 21st century is a fast-heating climate.”

To date, over 880 institutions from all sectors of society representing [more than $6 trillion](https://gofossilfree.org/divestment/commitments/) in assets have committed to some level of divestment. Notable commitments include New York City’s pensions, Norway’s Sovereign Wealth Fund, Axa Insurance, and the World Council of Churches.
