Washington, D.C. — This afternoon, Congress officially passed the sweeping budget reconciliation bill that Trump is calling the “Big, Beautiful Bill.” While the bill’s proponents claim it will save money, it will add over $3 trillion to the national debt, upend climate and social programs, and threaten the lives and health of millions.
Anne Jellema, 350.org Executive Director, Responds:
“While the bill’s proponents claim it will help ordinary working people, in fact it is replete with handouts to billionaire oil, gas and coal companies alongside huge tax breaks for the ultra-wealthy. At the same time, it guts all the programs that help communities survive the heatwaves, hurricanes, fires and floods caused by fossil fuel pollution – from advanced hurricane tracking to utility bill support and food assistance for the poorest households. Millions stand to lose their health and their homes, and tens of thousands will lose their lives.
“With Congress apparently in the pocket of billionaires, all eyes will now be on cities and states to drive progress towards affordable clean energy and a safe, healthy future for all. Mayors and governors should use all tools at their disposal to promote green jobs and rein in Big Oil, including through Polluter Pays laws such as those passed by New York and Vermont that hold fossil fuel companies liable for the damage they cause.”
