350 Responds to Chinese & Brazilian Climate Targets

BROOKLYN — In response to new pledges announced:

  • by the Chinese government to peak the country’s carbon emissions by 2030, and reduce carbon intensity by 60-65%; and
  • by the Brazilian government to reforest 12 million hectares of land and get 20% of its electricity from renewable sources by 2030,

350.org Strategy and Communications Director Jamie Henn issued the following statement.

“It’s clearly beginning to set in across the world that solving the climate crisis means transitioning our economy from fossil fuels to 100% renewable energy. Today’s pledges from China and Brazil are important steps in that direction. Now, it’s up to rich countries to pick up the pace: the current commitments on the table are still far from what science and justice demand. We need to see more climate finance, steeper emissions reductions, and stronger commitments to keep carbon in the ground–it’s time for reality to start matching the rhetoric. Here in the US, that means saying no to Keystone XL and Arctic drilling, and saying yes to a renewables revolution. Leadership in Paris starts with action at home.”
