As the House of Commons prepares to vote on Bill C-15, 350.org is warning that its proposed amendments to the Red Tape Reduction Act threaten Canada’s democracy and the rule of law.

Atiya Jaffar, Canada Country Manager at 350.org, issued the following statement:
“While we welcome the amendments adopted on Monday, after weeks of public outrage and sustained pressure on MPs, the only solution to this crisis is for Parliament to entirely withdraw Division 5, Part 5 of Bill C-15. The so-called “Henry the VIII Clause” has no place in our democracy. We cannot allow cabinet ministers to sidestep Parliament and bypass hard-fought environmental protections and human rights on behalf of Big Oil and other powerful corporations.”

Since January, 350.org’s Canada team has prioritized the fight against Bill C-15, mobilizing thousands of people across the country to flood their MPs’ inboxes and phone lines to oppose the undemocratic proposal. 350.org has joined over a hundred law, civil society, and environmental organizations raising the alarm about Bill C-15’s proposed legal exemption powers in an open letter published last week.
