Climate Announcement Casts Doubt on Trans Mountain

Toronto, ON – In response to today’s climate change announcement from the Canadian government, Amara Possian Canada Campaign Director with 350.org issued this statement:

“Today’s announcement is exactly the kind of increased climate action that the Parliamentary Budget Officer and the Canada Energy Regulator warned will make the Trans Mountain pipeline obsolete. It’s time for Prime Minister Trudeau to be clear if he’s going to listen to his own agencies and cancel this pipeline that his climate policies are making a waste of public money.

Increased spending on climate initiatives and the promise of creating 2 million climate jobs are great news, but Canada needs to do more if we’re going to meet our Paris Agreement promises. We need stronger 2025 and 2030 targets and plans to meet them. Even without that, today’s announcement clearly undermines the case for Trans Mountain. It’s time to stop dumping public money into this unnecessary pipeline so that we can put it towards what we really need: bold climate action, millions of green jobs and a climate plan that leaves no one behind.”
