Communities Pay the Price as Fossil Fuel Giant BP  Reaps Record Profits, 350.org Calls for a “Great Power Shift”

London, UK: 350.org is sounding the alarm on the obscene profits reported by fossil fuel companies, as households worldwide struggle with soaring energy prices and worsening climate impacts that are damaging lives, homes, and livelihoods exacerbated by the ongoing war in Iran and Lebanon

Quarter 1 profits for BP came in at 3.2 billion compared to 1.4 billion for the first quarter of 2025, double what it made in the same period last year. While millions are rationing electricity, choosing between heating and eating, major oil and gas corporations just had unprecedented earnings because the war in South West Asia sent oil prices surging. These profits come at a time when communities are grappling with extreme weather, displacement, and economic hardship linked to fossil fuel dependence.

Clémence Dubois, Global Campaigns Director at 350.org:

“BP just posted $3.2 billion in profits this quarter, more than double last year. They called it “exceptional.” People across the world have another word for what this quarter felt like.Families are being pushed to the brink by spiralling energy bills, while fossil fuel companies turn a war into a windfall. This is not just unjust, it’s unacceptable. Fossil fuels companies don’t just heat the planet, they fuel and thrive on geopolitical tension, insecurity, and human suffering. The solutions exist, what’s missing is the political will to stop polluters write the rules”
