350.org on Big Oil requesting governments protect fossil fuel infrastructure from climate damage

“Corporate polluters — not everyday people — must pay the costs of worsening climate impacts”

USA — Today, reports revealed that major oil companies are requesting governments, therefore taxpayers, pay the costs of a project that would protect fossil fuel infrastructure from climate impacts. This comes just two weeks before hundreds of thousands of people prepare to Rise for Climate, Jobs, and Justice ahead of the California-based Global Climate Action Summit.

In response, Thanu Yakupitiyage, 350.org U.S. Communications Manager, said:

“With wildfires, flooding, and storms all being made worse by climate change, it’s sickening that Big Oil is attempting to punt the costs of their own destruction onto the rest of us. We need investment in a just transition to 100% renewable energy that protects our communities, not outdated and dangerous fossil fuel infrastructure. That’s why communities across the U.S. and around the world will Rise for Climate, Jobs, and Justice on September 8. Corporate polluters — not everyday people — must pay the costs of worsening climate impacts.”
