Toronto, ON – In response to an investigation into a secretive fossil fuel industry and federal government working group published by The Breach, Amara Possian, 350.org’s Canada Campaigns Director, issued this statement:
“Justin Trudeau’s government loves to talk about putting workers and families at the center of their plan to tackle climate change. But when it comes time to deliver, he and his ministers are making backroom deals with Big Oil instead of keeping their promises to voters.
At the exact same time that thousands of people were calling on this government to deliver their promised Just Transition Act, Seamus O’Regan and members of Jonathan Wilkinson’s office were having secret meetings with Canada’s most notorious fossil fuel lobbyists and CEOs. We’re in a climate emergency and instead of delivering for workers, families and the climate, they brokered a $320 million Big Oil bailout, started echoing fossil fuel lobbyists’ talking points, and pledged to back new fossil fuel projects.”
