Break Free is only weeks away. Through peaceful direct action across the globe we can demonstrate to those in power that people everywhere are prepared to resist the fossil fuel industry’s plans to wreck the planet. This is the moment we’ve been waiting for.
Here’s a comprehensive list of all of the Break Free actions planned around the world:
Australia: May 8th – 600+ people staging civil disobedience at largest coal port in the world, in Newcastle.
Brazil: May 2nd-13th -2 actions:
- 1 action with as many as 3,000 people involved against coal
1 large-scale rally of 10,000+ people against fracking
Canada: May 13th-14th – hundreds of people will take action on the land and the water in Vancouver to target the tar sands pipelines. Some of the key messaging: “It’s time to take action to create a 100% renewable energy economy that respects the rights of Indigenous peoples.”
Ecuador: May 14th – action by Yasunidos trying to stop oil drilling in Yasuni.
Germany: May 14th-15th – Ende Gelande is planning a civil disobedience action occupying an open cast coal mine in an eastern region of Germany and aiming for even larger turnout and participation.
Indonesia: May 2nd, 6th – 2-3 local actions targeting coal mining in East Kalimantan and coal plant proposals in West Java followed by a mass action of 5,000+ people at the Presidential palace on May 11th . The May 11th action will include participants from many of the communities leading resistance to coal projects from around the country.
Nigeria: May 10th, 12th, 14th – 3 mobilisations targeting iconic oil infrastructure sites around the country.
New Zealand: May 6th, 7th, 11th, 13th – 4 acts of civil disobedience led by 350 Aotearoa going after a major bank’s finance of fossil fuels.
Philippines: May 4th – a mass mobilisation of over 10,000+ people demanding the cancellation of a coal plant in Batangas as well as all 27 other proposed plants in the Philippines.
South Africa: May 12th, 14th – two actions of hundreds of people highlighting the local impacts of coal and climate change, and calling out the Gupta family’s Oakbay Resources Ltd at their residence for their role in coal projects.
Spain: May 7th, 8th, 14th – a series of local 350 Barcelona actions targeting national oil and gas companies.
Turkey: May 15th – a mass action in Aliağa (near Izmir) at a coal waste site in an effort to call for a stop to 4 coal plant projects in the surrounding area.
UK: May 3rd – a mass action of hundreds in Wales targeting the largest open cast coal mine in the UK.
US: May 12th-15th – a series of mobilisations across all major regions:
May 12th & May 14th in Colorado: action targeting a federal fossil fuel lease auction, and proposed fracking site
May 13th in Washington State: hundreds will stage civil disobedience at the site of 2 refineries.
May 14th in Albany, New York: calling for no more bomb trains.
May 14th in California: going after the largest urban oil field in the US
May 15th in Washington DC: Stop Offshore Drilling Action
May 15th in the Midwest: targeting tar sands pipelines and infrastructure
