First week at putting faces to names, filling out paperwork, getting up to speed with all our many campaigns and activities around the world, learning various tools and systems, sprucing up our Facebook page. Oh, and kind of crying over this video:

It’s got to be a good sign job-wise when going through old videos and putting stuff up on Facebook brings tears to your eyes, right? I’m so delighted to be here and honored to be part of this team. As I was getting our page ready for Facebook’s new Timeline format, I got to revisit some of our movement’s most important milestones over the past few years:

10/24/09: I remember hearing about the first International Day of Climate Action in October 2009. I have to admit that at the time I was somewhat skeptical. A street protest? About climate change? What was that really going to accomplish? Well, it turned out to be what CNN called “the most widespread day of political action in our planet’s history,” and it was just the beginning. Check out the video and see for yourself.

10/10/10: By 2010 I was on board. The Global Work Party was about solutions. It was about building things, planting things, and getting our hands dirty. Millions of people came together to take action locally: urban farmers here in San Francisco (that’s us at Alemany Farm on the right), school insulating teams in London, solar panel installers in Kenya, and many more.

9/24/11: This was the video that got me all teary eyed. Maybe it was the music? Maybe I’m just a sucker for bicycles? Last year’s Moving Planet was a day to put our demands for climate action into motion—marching, biking, skating, paddling, unicycling—calling for the world to go beyond fossil fuels, and fast. At over 2000 events in 175+ countries, we were truly a movement rising.

We are truly a movement rising. These milestones are but the tip of the proverbial iceberg. (And we like our icebergs big and solid, proverbial or otherwise!) So take a moment to visit our new Facebook Timeline. “Like” us, if you haven’t already. Take a few more moments to watch some old videos. See if you don’t get just a bit sentimental too. And in less than a month, make another milestone with us on 5/5/12!
