{"id":175520934,"date":"2025-07-07T12:30:15","date_gmt":"2025-07-07T11:30:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/350.org\/uk\/?p=175520934"},"modified":"2025-07-07T12:31:02","modified_gmt":"2025-07-07T11:31:02","slug":"conversation-guide-tax-their-billions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/350.org\/uk\/conversation-guide-tax-their-billions\/","title":{"rendered":"Conversation Guide: Tax Their Billions"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>If they say \u201cWhy should we tax billionaires?\u201d<\/strong><\/h2>\n<h2><strong>You can say:<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>The super-rich are driving inequality and the climate crisis by hoarding wealth, investing in carbon polluting industries, and avoiding taxation &#8211; while the rest of us struggle with soaring energy costs, underfunded public services, and climate impacts like heatwaves and floods.<\/li>\n<li>Yet instead of taxing them properly, governments give billionaires a free pass and cut funding for vital public services while the rich get richer.<\/li>\n<li>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oxfam.org.uk\/media\/press-releases\/richest-1-emit-as-much-planet-heating-pollution-as-two-thirds-of-humanity-oxfam\/\">richest 1% produce as much carbon pollution as two-thirds of humanity<\/a> while paying next to nothing in taxes.<\/li>\n<li>Billionaires like Elon Musk actively undermine democracy by funding far-right politicians and policies that serve their interests at the expense of our welfare and our planet.<\/li>\n<li>Governments claim to lack funds to invest in renewable energy and public services &#8211; but if they raised taxes on those most able to pay a little more, they could raise billions in additional tax revenue. <a href=\"https:\/\/oxfam.app.box.com\/s\/hknz0z5v87koj4oxiwl4kdkyxn59dwyb\"><strong>Just a 2% tax on assets over \u00a310 million would affect only 20,000 people (a TINY proportion of the population) yet could raise \u00a324 billion a year!<\/strong><\/a><\/li>\n<li>The <a href=\"https:\/\/taxjustice.uk\/blog\/tax-the-wealth-of-the-super-rich-more-public-say\/\">majority<\/a> of the British public supports taxing extreme wealth &#8211; along with unions, charities and even millionaires <a href=\"https:\/\/patrioticmillionaires.uk\/\">themselves<\/a>!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><strong>If they say \u201cWon\u2019t the rich just leave if we raise taxes?\u201d<\/strong><\/h2>\n<h2><strong>You can say:<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Despite common claims from media and politicians that billionaires and multi-millionaires would leave at the drop of a hat if taxes on extreme wealth were increased slightly, there is little evidence to support this. Tax Justice UK recently released a report called <a href=\"https:\/\/taxjustice.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/The-millionaire-exodus-myth-A-critical-reconsideration-of-the-Henley-Partners-Private-Wealth-Migration-report-June2025.pdf\">\u201cThe millionaire exodus myth\u201d<\/a> which addresses this head on. They found:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Millionaires are \u201chighly immobile\u201d and none of the findings provide any evidence that tax played any role in any relocation of wealthy individuals.<\/li>\n<li>The methodology used in reports suggesting a \u201cmillionaire exodus\u201d which have been extremely widely shared across print and online news is flawed and claims are contradictory. The media has often also misreported or exaggerated the findings.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><strong>If they say \u201cIsn\u2019t it bad for business?\u201d<\/strong><\/h2>\n<h2><strong>You can say:<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>You could argue that allowing a small number of people to accrue \u2018unused\u2019 wealth is actually worse for the economy than ensuring millions of people have fair wages, affordable green energy and thriving public services. <a href=\"https:\/\/taxjustice.uk\/blog\/wealth-taxes-will-cause-the-rich-to-flee-12-wealth-tax-myths-debunked\/\">Redistribution can ensure working people have more disposable income<\/a>, thus raising demand for goods and services and benefiting British businesses and high streets.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>If they say \u201cSounds great! What can I do?\u201d<\/strong><\/h2>\n<h2><strong>You can say:<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/act.350.org\/sign\/tax-their-billions-uk?r=GB&amp;c=EU\">Sign the petition<\/a> calling for the UK Government to raise taxes on the super-rich.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/350.org\/mp-pledge-tax-their-billions\/\">Write an email to your MP<\/a> and ask them to back the Tax Their Billions pledge.<\/li>\n<li>Read the <a href=\"https:\/\/350.org\/tax-their-billions-dossier\/\">Tax Their Billions Dossier<\/a> if they want to find out more!<\/li>\n<li>And finally, you can ask them to <a href=\"https:\/\/whatsapp.com\/channel\/0029VbAPHR18F2pBU1R7Bb1j\">join you in the Tax Force WhatsApp channel<\/a> to stay involved!<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>So, you\u2019re talking to a friend or family member about the importance of taxing extreme wealth to help fund climate action and better public services for everyone.
