Prime Minister Carney is receiving accolades in response to his speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos earlier this weekI’ll admit it, it was satisfying to hear Carney call out US hegemony and economic bullying.

But I’m also worried about the path Carney’s forecasting for Canada’s future. We should all be worried.

Buried within Carney’s speech was a celebration of the action he’s taken to roll back corporate taxes, undermine environmental protections, and fast-track climate-destroying projects.

We know how this story plays out. We know that this speech falls within the rhythm of Carney’s regular pattern of using US economic bullying as an excuse to accelerate new fossil fuel projectsThat’s why we have our work cut out for us in 2026 and we need your support. Will you consider making a donation to support our work?

Parliament’s returning next week, but 2026 is already off to a rocky start.

Unmasked Power Grabs: The federal government is poised to pass Bill C-15, an omnibus bill that would give Big Oil and megacorporations the ability to bypass environmental protections, labour laws, and Indigenous rights. This power grab would allow federal ministers to exempt entities from federal law to advance projects and activities deemed to be “in the public interest.”

Criminalizing Peaceful Protest: Another thing that’s on the cusp of passing in the House of Commons is Bill C-9, an alarming piece of legislation that would criminalize peaceful protest. C-9 would make it easier to target Indigenous land defenders and the climate justice movement. This should sound alarm bells for anyone who cares about our democratic principles and believes in the power of social movements to build a more peaceful, safe, and just world.

A Red Carpet for Big Oil: 2025 ended on an alarming note. Massive rollback of climate policies, promises to build new pipelines, and new subsidies for Big Oil billionaires. Now that everything fossil fuel lobbyists have been asking for is on the table, it’s just a matter of time before they start racing to build new pipelines and megaprojects that would devastate our climate. Indeed, the Government of Alberta has already begun to propagandize the Northwest Coast Tar Sands Pipeline.

We know that 350 Canada has an important role to play in this moment – to mobilize people power and fight back. Will you help us build the massive movement we need to win a better future for all of us?

We’ve got big plans for the year ahead:

  • Getting the truth out there: We will continue to expose Big Oil’s dirty tricks and equip everyday people with tactics to demand better from federal leaders. We’re committed to using our existing platforms and new tools to reach as many people as possible.
  • Activating communities to toxify pipelines: Last year, we sent a powerful message with Draw the Line. Now, we’re committed to ensuring that people do the work that’s necessary to educate, engage, and mobilize their communities against the toxic projects that the fossil fuel industry wants to bulldoze ahead.
  • Fighting for a People’s Power Grid: We know that the only path forward for people and the planet is cheap, clean, renewable energy. In Canada, expanding renewable energy at scale is only possible with a publicly-owned East West Grid. That’s why we have big plans to popularize this demand and secure commitments to ensure this critical project serves communities, nor corporate interests.

We may be in a New World Order but that’s no excuse to fall for Big Oil’s same old dirty tricks. This is a chance to build the better future we all deserve. That’s what we’re fighting for.
