350.org responds to UK Chancellor’s attempts to expand airports

London, UK. Today, Rachel Reeves doubled down on her dangerous push for growth at all costs, once again signalling her intention to undermine critical climate goals by  unnecessarily backing another runway at Heathrow.

Matilda Borgström, UK campaigner at 350.org said:

“On one hand, it’s a relief to hear Rachel Reeves acknowledging in her speech today the need for investment in homegrown renewable energy, and that growth and climate action go hand in hand. But Rachel Reeves’s speech shows the government is prioritising headline-grabbing plans, like a new runway at Heathrow. More runways will do little to fix the economy but will definitely undermine efforts to cut climate pollution and safeguard communities from rising energy bills and climate impacts like flooding.

After rubbing shoulders with the super-rich at Davos last week, Rachel Reeves has returned to the UK with the wrong priorities and a narrow-minded economic vision. There is growing support for more transformative economic measures, like a wealth tax on the super rich, to generate huge sums for investment – building a future-proof economy, create jobs and climate-resilient communities. The Chancellor needs to spend more time listening to the wider public and less time taking advice from the ultra-wealthy.”
