Opposition Parties Need to Push to Turn Net Zero into a made-in-Canada Green New Deal

In response to Canada’s announced “Canadian Net-Zero Emissions Accountability Act” Amara Possian, Canada Campaign Director with 350.org issued this response.

“The climate legislation that Justin Trudeau presented today could be the starting point for real climate action in Canada. The opposition parties the Liberals need to pass this bill have a historic opportunity to amend the bill and turn it into a made-in-Canada Green New Deal.

We need to see bolder climate targets and deeper emissions cuts. We need to see real, concrete plans that make Indigenous nations full partners in this process, and we need a true just transition plan that supports communities and guarantees millions of good, green, union jobs to tackle the climate crisis and rebuild from COVID-19.

And, we need to make sure that Canada’s fossil fuel industry can’t undermine all this by, for example, banning fossil fuel executives from the advisory panel outlined in the bill.”
