New York, NY — Today, the New York State Senate passed the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act, a version of the Climate and Community Protect Act backed by NYRenews and thousands of New Yorkers to deliver climate justice to those most impacted by the climate crisis.
In response, May Boeve, 350.org Executive Director, issued the following statement:
“Thanks to the resiliency and resolve of communities on the frontlines of the climate crisis, New York is shaping up to be a model for real climate action for the rest of the world. The Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act is a partial victory for New Yorkers, with the strongest emissions reduction standards in the country in the face of fossil fuel billionaires and their political allies’ delay and deceit to preserve the status quo.
“True climate justice demands transformative change, and the fight continues for worker protections and ensuring communities still repairing from climate catastrophes like Superstorm Sandy are prioritized in the transition to the renewable energy economy. While Governor Cuomo dismissed the need for this level of transformative action as recently as last week, we thank NY Renews and the thousands of people fighting until our communities win.
“There’s still more work to make New York fossil free. The fight to stop the Williams fracked gas pipeline is escalating as utilities and fossil fuel companies hold New Yorkers’ energy needs hostage. The people of Western New York still face the Northern Access Pipeline. Communities surrounding Newburgh still face the Danskammer fracked gas power plant.
“That’s why these same communities are being trained in nonviolent direct action to halt the buildout of fracked gas pipelines and power plants, and to protect our health and safety. And we can expect tens of thousands of New Yorkers to engage in the September 20th climate strikes with a clear message: there’s no room for fossil fuel projects in a Green New Deal world.”
