McKenna calls Ian Anderson’s comments “not accurate” but refuses to oppose Kinder Morgan project
Ottawa, ON – This morning, pressed by a group of concerned community members staging a sit-in in her office, Minister of the Environmental and Climate Change Catherine McKenna disagreed with comments made by Kinder Morgan CEO Ian Anderson.
“It’s not accurate, the science of climate change is clear. All credible scientists believe that climate change is here, it’s happening, we need to tackle it,” the Minister said when pressed to make a statement. Raw video of the interaction can be found here.
The sit-in at McKenna’s office coincides with a similar action at the office of Transport Minister Marc Garneau in Montreal. Both coming one day after the offices of Jim Carr, Minister of Natural Resources, and Carolyn Bennett, Minister of Indigenous Affairs were occupied by similar protests.
“Right now, Prime Minister Trudeau and his cabinet have a choice between standing with a fossil fuel company, whose CEO is publicly questioning climate science or standing with Indigenous peoples, youth and the majority of people in Canada who want to see real climate action,” explained Katie Perfitt, an organizer with 350.org who spoke with Minister McKenna. “At this point we would hope that choice is clear, reject Kinder Morgan.”
The sit-ins in the offices of McKenna and Garneau are ongoing. Up to the minute information can be found by following @350Canada and #kmsitin on twitter.
