350.org responds to new UN report demanding urgent climate action

A new report from the World Meteorological Organization warns of the dire implications of climate inaction. The report shows atmospheric carbon dioxide reached 420 parts per million, the highest level in at least 800,000 years. The report underscores Copernicus’ finding earlier this year that 2024 was the hottest year on record for the planet, with the world breaching 1.5 degree average temperature increase for the first time.

The report reaffirms this does not mean the Paris Agreement, which uses long-term averages to track warming, has failed. Rather, it is clear that incremental steps are no longer enough—the world needs immediate, decisive action to avoid catastrophic, long-term consequences.

Namrata Chowdhary, Chief of Public Engagement at 350.org, so named as a statement and a reminder of what ‘safe’ looks like: 350 parts per million in the atmosphere, says:

“Today, the WMO is reminding us how far we have overshot safety. At 420 ppm, we have already witnessed too much devastation and loss. How many more warnings will it take, from the scientific community, and the Earth itself, before we act decisively to prevent further catastrophe?

The global climate movement is pushing for transformational change, with communities coming together to oppose damaging projects and pipelines while uniting to demand, and co-create, people-centred renewable energy. The transition is already happening – but we need governments to do their part in ending fossil fuel dependency and creating the conditions for climate solutions to thrive. This is our path of resistance: preventing every tenth of a degree of warming – every wildfire, flood, heatwave, and drought we can.”

Notes to editors:

Our name, 350.org, is a reference to 350 parts per million (ppm) – the concentration of carbon dioxide (CO2) in the atmosphere considered the safe limit to avoid the worst impacts of climate change. This report confirms we have now breached 420 ppm – a stark reminder that our fight to stop this number increasing further is more important than ever.

350.org is active around the world, supporting renewable energy solutions and communities fighting for climate justice. Some of our active campaigns include Energias Dos Povos, REPower Afrika, Our PAWA, and Tax Their Billions.
