Mass Resistance Gears Up As Minnesota Commissioners Move to Approve Line 3 Pipeline

Brooklyn, NY
— Today, Minnesota’s Public Utilities Commission (PUC) voiced unanimous intention to approve the Certificate of Need for Enbridge’s Line 3 tar sands pipeline. The commissioners have not yet made a decision on the route for the project. The decision follows years of opposition from tribes and Minnesotans against the pipeline. 350.org co-founder Bill McKibben gave the following response:

“For too many centuries the people who run America have ignored its original inhabitants, and for too many decades they’ve ignored its climate scientists. Line 3 is an integral part of the global warming machine, and with the leadership of Indigenous peoples across the region we will keep fighting it.”

Line 3 is one of three proposed tar sands pipelines, along with Keystone XL and Kinder Morgan, facing massive Indigenous-led opposition. Communities resisting pipelines and other fossil fuel projects will be taking part in a global day of action on September 8th, called Rise for Climate, Jobs, and Justice, ahead of the Global Climate Action Summit in San Francisco later that month.
