For all of us working to protect the planet, it’s a time of unprecedented challenges. Even as we draw closer to irreversible climate tipping points, governments and companies are backtracking on their commitments, and funding for the climate movement is under pressure. To meet the urgency of the moment while remaining financially sustainable, we at 350.org are making some big changes.

We will unfortunately need to reduce our global staff by about 30%. We deeply regret having to say goodbye to so many talented and committed people, but we are grateful for the incredible legacy they have contributed — to 350, and to the movement. It is on their shoulders that our work around the world is built, and will continue to thrive, despite the odds we face.

We are introducing a lighter, flatter structure that will help us be more agile in response to the unpredictable, complex world we’re working in. We are pleased to announce that Savio Carvalho will take up the new position of Managing Director of Campaigns and Networks, overseeing both the country and global teams responsible for driving our external impact; while Olivia Langhoff will become the new Managing Director of Operations and Engagement, overseeing all the teams responsible for the multi-faceted resources that our campaigns need to achieve impact.

Between them, Olivia and Savio bring six decades of non-profit management experience across four continents — including over ten years at 350.org. They are deeply committed to our mission and values and to the climate movement. We couldn’t ask for better leaders than Olivia and Savio to help guide the organization through the peril and promise ahead.

Our strategy review led to a decision to do deeper and more sustained campaigning and organizing in fewer countries. These were tough choices to make, but we believe a smaller, more focussed 350 is best positioned to drive change in the current circumstances. We have prioritized the countries in which we believe we can make the biggest difference now, but we will regularly review the situation with an eye to changing opportunities for impact.

In the US, where so much of 350.org’s history and roots lie, we believe that the greatest potential for progress in the US currently lies at city and state level, with our network of independent local groups and affiliates and with the concerned community members they mobilize. We are retaining a small team to support this network.

We are not scaling down in courage or ambition. With a more focused strategy and geographic footprint, we are determined to speed the end of dangerous fossil fuels and hasten affordable clean energy for all. We count on your continued support in this important next phase of our journey.
